DESCRIPTIONS

LOD 012 Sun Splitter "II"

Land of Decay is pleased to announce our newest release, “II” from Sun Splitter. Locrian has had the pleasure of seeing and playing with this amazing project plenty of times and we’ve been amazed by this group every time. The band originally released this album as a CDr that is long out-of-print. We’re happy to have this release available as an edition of 100 copies.

The tape consists of four tracks, thirty seven minutes, and RIFFS, RIFFS, RIFFS!!! Riffs that slowly build up and build up until they morph into mysterious doom-laden melodies. We can’t say enough about the intricate guitar playing on this release. The mysterious guitar melodies are complimented by vocals that are at times gnarled, chanted, and abstract. At the same time, there are electronic samples interspersed throughout the tracks that add subtle textures and filigree. Weird percussion that brings to mind Joe Preston’s drumming on Earth’s early releases accents the big riffs, making them even bigger. Dark, black, bleak, and totally engrossing.

This is forward thinking industrial metal that would appeal to fans of Godflesh, and Dead World. Sun Splitter are definitely one of the most underrated bands in Chicago and one that you’re sure to hear more about in the coming years. The cassette features original artwork from Terence Hannum. All tapes were professionally duplicated on chrome, hi-bias, tape.

LOD 010 Neil Jendon "Male Fantasies"

Neil Jendon has been one of our favorite Chicago musicians since we first saw him play at Enemy with Consumer Electronics in 2008. "Male Fantasies" is a modular synthesizer workout that follows up his recent CD "Cities in Flight" (Bloodlust!). The pieces on here range from being thick, noisy, abrasive passages to quiet serene and contemplative. Neil is one of the most talented musicians in the Chicago music scene and we're elated to be releasing this tape for him. Our description isn't going to do this release justice so check out part of it below.

Locrian "The Crystal World" 2xCD
Label Description:
A marked change had come over the forest, as if dusk had begun to fall. Everywhere the glacé sheaths which enveloped the trees and vegetation had become duller and more opaque. The crystal floor underfoot was occluded and gray, turning the needles into spurs of basalt. The brilliant panoply of colored light had gone, and a dim amber glow moved across the trees, shadowing the sequined floor. At the same time it had become considerably colder.
The Crystal World, the third studio album from Locrian, is an epic journey. Titled after JG Ballard’s 1964 novel that tells the story of a physician who specializes in leprosy sent to a remote African outpost to discover a jungle that is slowly crystallizing and encroaching upon everything it touches. Disc one comprises six tracks while disc two consists of one extended piece, Extinction, that picks up on the intensity of disc one and sustains it for close to an hour. On The Crystal World, Terence Hannum, and André Foisy, are joined by Steven Hess (On, Pan American, Ural Umbo) on percussion and electronics. Hess’ contribution pushes Locrian deeper into the abyss of despair rendering a sound that is darker, bleaker, and engulfing than any of the group’s previous releases. Locrian continue the conceptual trajectory of blackened drone that the group initially embarked on during their first studio album Drenched Lands (2009). Masters of layering, The Crystal World finds the group manipulating tones and textures that transport the listener to an apocalyptic wasteland. At times, the layers are serene and somber, at other times they are chaotic.
The Crystal World is Locrian's essential release, finding the band creating a sound all of their own. A sound that evades simplistic analogies to black metal, power-electronics, noise, or other categories. This is the album that will stun fans of the bands previous works with how far the group has come from their early releases. Presented in a Stoughton gatefold sleeve with art by Vberkvlt.
Vinyl edition out on Utech Records in 2011.

Locrian "Territories" CD
Label Description:
BloodLust! and Small Doses are pleased to announce their co-release of "Territories," the second studio full-length from Locrian. The album was recorded in January 2009, at Phantom Manor Studios in Chicago, IL, and it features a group of collaborators including Blake Judd (Nachtmystium, Twilight), Bruce Lamont (Yakuza), Andrew Scherer (Velnias), and Mark Solotroff (Anatomy of Habit, BLOODYMINDED). André Foisy and Terence Hannum have spent the last several years honing the Locrian sound and they have taken elements from noise, power-electronics, drone, and black metal to come up with a truly unique approach that reflects the sprawling urban decay that surrounds them in Chicago. After nearly two dozen releases, they have found themselves in the world of "Territories." For this release, Locrian has pulled out all of the stops and they have fleshed out the band with the help of Mark Solotroff on vocals and synthesizer, Blake Judd on guitar, Bruce Lamont on saxophone and vocals, and Andrew Scherer on drums. The results of this massive collaborative effort are apparent from the moment that the album starts. The textures run darker and deeper; the vocals -- sometimes three layers deep -- seem to be conjured from the decrepit muck of a failed civilization; the feedback takes on a more pronounced presence; and the augmented line-up allows for full-on black metal assaults that burst out of the tortured drones that Locrian have come to be known for. Truly a case of the whole being greater than the sum of the parts, "Territories" may well be the most fully realized form of Locrian’s dystopian vision. As with their previous album, "Drenched Lands" (2009, At War With False Noise and Small Doses - CD; BloodLust! - LP), "Territories" was skillfully mastered by Jason Ward at Chicago Mastering Service, and the sound could not be more monumental. The limited edition LP version of "Territories," released in March 2010, garnered extremely strong critical attention (see selected reviews below) and we expect to reach even more ears and eyes with this new, handsome six-panel digipak compact disc edition.
